Lanarkshire based Insignia Technologies, located at Biocity Scotland, said that its new label can easily be incorporated into any film lid. The label is activated when a packet is opened and triggers a timer that changes colour as the food within loses freshness – meaning consumers can tell straight away if their snack is out of date or not.
With an estimated 18 million tonnes of edible food sent to landfill in the UK each year, Insignia Technologies said that it is hoping its packaging design will help reduce the environmental and economic impact associated with wasted food.
The Scottish business unveiled its patented Embedded Timer at the Packaging Innovations show.
According to the firm, the product has already generated interest from major supermarket chains in UK, France and USA. Insignia Technologies is now looking to roll-out its new development in food packaging technology in these key regions during 2013.
‘Freshness for the consumer’
Insignia Technologies founding director Erik Smyth said: “This is all about ensuring quality and freshness for the consumer while preventing food from going to waste. People open a packet of meat or cheese, forget how long it’s been open, and consequently may not take the risk of eating it. Our new packaging will remove this uncertainty.
“The technology development partnership with the University of Strathclyde and the funding support of Scottish Enterprise has enabled us to bring this novel low-cost timing solution to the market place.”
Insignia Technologies is also in the process of developing indicator products suitable for the likes of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals packaging, which it will look to roll-out within the next year.

The conference program has been revealed as registration opens for the inaugural Label Summit Indonesia which is being held at the Westin Resort Nusa Dua in Bali between 29-30 May. Focusing on the label and package printing industry, the Summit will comprise a mix of technical presentations, real life business case studies and the latest industry insight and business intelligence into market trends, conditions and challenges.
The Summit commences with a roundup of market trends with presentations by Multi-Color Corporation’s Brenton Barrett who will look at global trends and Ariana Susanti of the Indonesian Packaging Federation who will explore the latest developments in South East Asia. In a printer panel discussion, converters from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines will look at printing as part of the economy and future growth opportunities.
The afternoon’s sessions will address the latest available technologies, capabilities and applications. The keynote being delivered by HP Indigo’s Christian Menegon, will focus on making the move from a conventional to digital workflow and examine how the converter needs to adapt to cater for short run jobs. Other topics include creating value with 3D technologies and a guide to flexo technology, materials and performance.
Day two’s content has been developed to help identify new opportunities for business growth. Sri Yulianti, research and development packaging manager – home personal care from Unilever will consider how to implement a sustainable strategy for environmentally friendly packaging practices. Supa Stik Label’s Pete Holywell will share secrets on how to transform your business using online marketing and social media platforms, while other subjects include effective anti-counterfeiting solutions for brand protection.
Aimed at label and package printing converters, brand owners and designers, the Summit is complemented by a table-top exhibition with exhibitors including Esko, Flint Group, Gallus, Mark Andy, Nilpeter, Omet, RotoMetrics and Stork Prints. Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials today introduced a new collection of North American Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper label materials. The new products’ prices are comparable with those of non-certified alternatives to drive the use of FSC-certified materials throughout the value chain.
The new collection of FSC-certified products contains 22 specifications featuring three paper facestocks—Fasson® 54# Semi-Gloss FSC, Fasson Lightweight Dairy FSC and Fasson Estate Label® No. 8 FSC—commonly used in wine, spirits, dairy and food applications. The new offering is a result of the company’s commitment to develop and offer sustainable label and packaging solutions to converters and brand owners.
